The greatest radio station in the world, WFMU, is short on their mortgage and operating funds and is having a one minute fund-raising marathon this Wednesday, Dec 6th, from 2 pm to 2:01 p.m. (EST) to help alleviate their financial crunch. In an entertainment/information world where everything I seem to enjoy for disappears or is impossible to find or is simply crushed by uber-conglomerates, 'FMU has been able to survive a multitude of changing tastes and financial nightmares. Supporting WFMU has been a tradition here at the HOF, we only wish we had more to give, the station has become one of my favorite things ever, and I hope they can surmount their latest money troubles to continue to pump out radio as it was meant to be. Meaning, anything and everything audio, fueld with passion, ruled by personal taste and choice, take it or leave it. And no ads, and no underwriting, which is why they're always broke. But they bought their own building a while back, and have taken smart measures to stay alive despite the odds and the indifference of the world at large. For those of you unfamiliar with WFMU, they stream live, and they archive the hell out of their programs. What are you into? punk, funk, junk, gosepl, comedy, interviews, monologues, real country, Chrisitan radio dramas, old radio air checks of classic DJ's, hip-hop, experimental, black metal, reggae, doo-wop, garage, collage, classic rock, glam, foreign, blaspheming rants, afro-beat, jazz, soundtracks, novelty records, acoustic, old 78's and wax cylinder recordings, sound bites, old ads, dead air, children's music, political rants, philosophical lectures, devil music, spoken-word records, batshit skronk-rock, you name it, they've played it, and you will love it or it will drive you up the friggin' wall, but a couple'a hours later it's a whole new show, or you can stop the stream and call up a new archive to try out. Anyway, if you dig the station, chuck a few bucks their way this week. They have two premiums for the minute-long marathoon, a hoodie sweatshirt (I have a beautiful WFMU Jim Flora hoodie from a couple of years ago) and a DJ cookbook/CD. If you're a newbie or curious, give a listen and think about sending them a ten-spot or whatever you can when/if you can. They're cartoonist-friendly, to boot, having used lots of comics people in their old program guides, to design their marathon premiums, etc. And Kaz used to be a DJ on the station. I love this station like comics, and would hate to see them in the lurch. Anyway, there's my pitch and my plug. Do with it what you will. At least explore the station, it's great. Especially the archives.
