Friday night, driving into Kreuzberg, and I try and remember who else is playing besides Final Fantasy, but I guess I don't really care. I've waited ages to see him live, and expectations are high. But when I do see the line-up on the posters outside, I'm pleasantly surprised: Adem, El Perro Del Mar, and Vetiver. What it doesn't say is that the whole night is weirdly relaxed, for the first three bands, most people at the front sit or lie on the floor, ourselves included. Adem is first up, and initially I'm kinda disappointed - he seems like another earnest Londoner who sings his songs over his acoustic guitar, and then gives a wry look to the audience as though his heart was floating invisibly above their heads with the music. But slowly I realise there's a bit more, not just in his impressive multi-instrumentalism, but because his heart really might be floating in the room, like some sort of ghost. Still, I didn't take any photos of him. El Perro Del Mar (above) were next, and I had never heard anything of them before, but confusingly enough, they (she?) sound more like a sixties version of The Shout Out Louds than anything else, right down to the singer's flowy clothing. The guitarist especially seemed out of place, with his sharp suit and bluesy style, he kept glancing at the singer, almost in the hope that she would begin to throw her voice around John Lee Hooker style, and he would rip out solos so bluesy he might well have to remove his jacket. Vetiver, on the other hand, are that bluesy. They are exactly like the band from Almost Famous, even the guitarist looks like Billy Crudup. Once again, not what I was expecting from a band that occasionally counts Devendra Banhart amongst its ranks. But Owen Pallett made me forget about them almost instantly, irritating me with his unbelievable violin playing (I believe the first word I said after he started playing was: "Fucker."), building an invisible orchestra with his loop pedal, playing piano too ("I just bought this today, so you don't get bored") and all the time singing and shrieking like a really angry, violin-wielding punk. The play between him and his friend in charge of projections (another genius) was always amazing. Highlights were 'Song, Song, Song', 'Many Lives' and his cover of Mariah Carey's 'Fantasy'. See him as soon as you can. If you must, leave the country to do it. Adem: Launch Yourself Launch Yourself (Hot Chip remix) El Perro Del Mar: God Knows (recommended) It's All Good Candy Final Fantasy: Arctic Circle The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead Peach, Plum, Pear (Joanna Newsom cover) He Poos Clouds (video) Fantasy (Mariah Carey cover with Ed Droste, video) No Cars Go (Arcade Fire cover, video) {Note: to anyone who emailed me, I'm sorry that I haven't been able to reply lately! And I also saw the Essex Green, so I'll write about them soon too.}
