Going to show my age here. As much as I like music, I don't read anything about it (press, websites etc.). And, to me, Emo was something that grew from punk in the early to mid 80's. I didn't like it, but hey, it came and went. But one thing Warcraft does is expose you to a lot of kids. And a lot of them get made fun of, for being Emo. Huh? This got me thinking. Why are some early teens listening to an obscure, 20 year old offshoot of punk? Has it returned? Been revived? And, if so, why? Turns out it has, kind of. Emo. The third wave. And as a term to describe a certain kind of individual. The funny thing is, to begin with it sounded like something close to my heart - Goth. But it really isn't. It's also all over MTV and I can say that, honestly, I can be forgiven. These bands look very goth sometimes. And most people seem to use this description: "a general state of unhappiness or melancholy" Ah, so it's like goth acted, but really wasn't (we just wanted everyone to think that, while we had a great time). Anyway, I don't like the music and I don't know the bands. It certainly doesn't sound like anything I ever knew from 1984, but hey, times change. What's funny to me is it's use in Warcraft. I kid you not, here's a wonderful article - The Emo Tank. About a warrior who constantly degrades himself, is unhappy with himself and is extremely melencholic about things. "This new emo warrior would regularly descend into self deprecation and long-winded apologies whenever the boss fight or the raid didn’t go well, which was really annoying because he’d need reassuring for 15 minutes and he’d have to talk to a guild officer and he wanted the MT (that’s Mr. Main Tank to you peons) to evaluate his tanking skills and on and on" Exactly what you don't want in a Warcraft player. Funny thing is, I've had to deal with more than a handful of people like this in the last year. People who beg forgiveness for mistakes, take blame that they don't have to, need constant reassuring that they are doing ok. Bugs the hell out of me. My view is that if you arn't strong enough to deal with things*, I'm not about to help you**. Honestly. People. Here's an anti-Emo joke for you. "I wish my grass was Emo, then it would cut itself". * I also really really hate the exact opposite. People who thank me for healing them. You wouldn't believe how many times I get "great heals!" or "thanks for the heal!" every few minutes. I mean, you don't hear me saying "Hey, great sheep!" or "WoW, great aggro control!" or even "Hey well done with that Heroic Strike!". Sheesh. ** Ok, it's probably true to say that my ideal Warcraft group doesn't congratulate anyone, except for when a boss is dead, the rest of the time is spent in useful conversation about how best to deal with things. Not ego management.
