The majority of small Businesses do not backup (02.01.2008 15:18:52)

It is still a fact that the majority of small to medium sized companies (5 to 100 staff) in the UK still do not backup their data leaving themselves open and subject to the consequences of data loss.

Most companies associate the reason for data loss with catastrophic events such as fire or flood so adopt the attitude “it will never happen to me”. But recent data loss events illustrate that human error is a major factor. The UK Government recently lost thousands of confidential files all to be blamed on an administrator and courier but this sort of event highlights how easily human actions can cause data loss.

Many SMEs do not have a backup plan, more importantly a shocking 77% of UK small businesses are still unable to recover data fully. While online backup and disaster recovery solutions are very easy and cost effective to implement but still do not appear in the IT policy of all SMEs, relying totally on traditional tape and USB drive backup methods does not offer a total data availability solution.

Latest research indicates that nearly half of UK businesses that lose mission critical data will cease to trade within 18 months.

The best practice of any backup solution should ensure data which is currently being backed up and stored on tape or local hard drives should also secured offsite, away from potential disasters such as fire, theft, flood and human error. A secure and automated online backup process will address all backup requirements in instantly.

Online backup solutions from PerfectBackup are available for businesses of all sizes in the UK and once set up will ensure business data is always stored securely at an offsite location. The very nature of online backup also means that the risk of human error is eliminated.
