Now that I've set up date Dan, I have to publicise it. While I'm sure it's a product that a lot of women want, perhaps not a lot of them are aware of it's availability. While a viral marketing campaign would be ideal (especially given it's free for me), I don't think I can rely upon that vector, as such, I'm turning to advertising - Internet advertising. Google offers Adwords, however knowing which terms to target is tricky. Fortunately Google also offer Google Trends, which you can drill down to a city level of detail. The tool has limitations. It only returns literal searches, so if you enter 'man' it wont include searches for 'men' which the search engine does. You can't find out what terms people used in conjunction with the word, which would give you a much better idea of search patterns. It does, however, show variations over time, for example, the terms love and valentine become popular around valentines day. Which leads me to think that people who are looking for love in Google are generally single and literally looking for love, I'd also hazard a guess they're mostly female. Love is in. Obviously we want to ensure we're targetting women looking for men, as opposed to men looking for anything, or women looking for women. The term 'man' actually rates higher than 'men', but better include both of them just to be sure. We're offering dating here and Dan is single, so my search terms are love, man, men, dating, single. I'd also better include Sydney in there since I'm pretty sure he's not willing to travel. A litmus test in Google returns a positive result too, although there's some heavy hitters in the sponsored links bar there. Nothing Dan can't handle though, RSVP, you've met your match. Hmmmm ... would adding RSVP to the search terms be a good idea?
