UCB is a new, private, not-for-profit and “Western-style” tertiary institution of higher education, designed to provide an international teaching and learning experience entirely conducted in the English language.Through a collaborative support agreement, UCB is also assisted by The American University of Beirut (founded in 1866 as a private, independent, non-sectarian institution of higher learning, functioning under a Charter from the State of New York) in the development of its academic administrative systems and learning & teaching standards. and an aggressive & ambitious investment program is in place to grow student numbers and facilities over the next 10 years. The vision of the President of UCB (Shaikh Dr Khalid Bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa, who is a member of the Royal Family of Bahrain) was to be build a "Western-style" quality-based university to serve both the Kingdom of Bahrain and the wider Gulf Region. The President was awarded his own PhD from a UK Business School with a QAAHE(UK) "excellent" rating. Many students are drawn from the royal and leading families; and employees of major corporations and public services in the Gulf region with about 55% female intake. University College Bahrain intends to differentiate itself both within the Kingdom of Bahrain and the Gulf Region by its commitment to "Growth through Excellence". ==Athletics and Recreation== ((Image:Marathon6.jpg|thumb|230px|right)) The University offers a wide range of sports and athletics, and recreational programs through its Office of Student Affairs. Such sports and athletics are often organized for students to compete among themselves. This is while, UCB is usually among the first to sign-up with a team for external competitions among other local Universities and educational institutions. Such events take place throughout the year to ensure continuous opportunity for the students to compete and be a part of University spirit. ==Clubs and Societies== Opportunities for students to participate in extra-curricular activities, generally organized under the view of the Office of Student Affairs are numerous. Clubs hold events, lectures, debates, and publications relevant to an academic major or program, as well as provide opportunities to meet with others to pursue common recreational, social, or cultural interests.
